You might not believe me, but I never counted calories to get to where I am today.
I lost over 30lb, slimmed my waist, grew my booty, and maintained my weight for years after without having to weigh my food, or count calories. Although that is what you are taught in CPT (certified personal trainer) classes it just never made sense to me because I always thought about what happens after you lose the weight? How do you approach meals and etc. at the stage?
When I first started lifting weights back in 2012 the only information out there were body builders sharing their journey which was helpful, but these guys were on a totally different mission than I was. Yes I wanted to build muscle but I wasn’t going to compete and I wasn’t willing to sacrifice my health to achieve the body transformation I wanted. The super high protein diet with little to no carbs and fats doesn’t sit right with me so I decided to that there has to be a way to prioritize my health as I achieved the body transformation that I wanted. I eventually stumbled upon the plant-based diet and I have never looked back. This way of eating gave me everything I was looking for: nutrition, muscle building and natural fat loss. I have been plant-based for about 8 years now, I have not eaten meat since and have an intuitive relationship with eggs and cheese. Being plant-based doesn’t mean you need to stop eating meat this is just a personal choice of mine.
I have always been very big on creating and teaching sustainable habits because I love me a long-term solution not just a band aid. Plus being on my personal body transformation journey I knew I wanted these results long term and the idea of weighting my food just made no sense to me.
I am not going to deny that it is true, counting your calories and lose weight works, but this created such a funky dynamic with food. Food goes from being nourishing and pleasurable to something that must controlled and restricted. As women we already have enough pressure from society to diet and be as skinny as possible since we are in middle school, the last thing we need is to think that to have our dream body that we need to restrict food. The last thing you need as an ambitious busy af woman is to worry about if you ate too many calories and how are going to burn them.
Food is good. Food nourishes your body. Food is pleasurable. Food is a treat that should be enjoyed and looked at through the lens of nourishment for your body, the fuel for you to live your best life and ultimately something that adds joy to your day.
Instead of counting calories why not learn what each food nourishes you with. Instead, why don’t we priorities counting how many different types of veggies our plate has. Why not look at shifting our diet to more nutrient dense foods instead of limiting out calorie intake.
Your relationship with food is so vital to your fitness goals but more importantly your overall wellbeing. You are going to eat food FOREVER and the relationship you have with it impacts all areas of your life including your happiness.
